This past year year has seen an explosion in the Bowtied community on X (formerly known as twitter) of people starting physical product brands.
If you are scratching your head at what I am referring to, the Bowtied community is a semi-anonymous but cooperative collective of subject matter expert accounts that use the "BowTied" moniker and actively all help each other to grow their particular brands.
If you are active on X, no doubt you have seen them, I retweet them often.
This idea of a "branded" semi anonymous community that offers products and services was the brainchild of the BowTiedBull account, which has the #1 finance blog on substack and was previously known as WallStPlayboys. They are group of former wall st finance guys who have been on the cutting edge of online business since 2015 and the massively growing "Wifi Money" economy as its now called.
So, I am twitter friends with many of them
And one of them contacted me recently, BowtiedBroseidon.
He wanted to pitch me on his nooptropic he was developing.
Initially I was hesitant
I get pitched A LOT on supplements. I have a large following after all, I have great readership, its to be expected. I have engagement that people want.
Ive said no to practically all of these inquiries. And Broseidon's I didnt pay any special attention at first.
But, he kept following up, and I realized he was not formulating a "preworkout" product as I had initially assumed, but a rather different kind of nootropic, one designed to enhance cognitive function and creativity during social functions
A nootropic to make you more SOCIAL?
YES. It was an intriguing idea. Personally, Ive never struggled with being social. I love talking to people. But, a hypothetical supplement that enhanced sociability would also have a positive effect on creative thinking as well
Maybe this could be useful for work productivity?
I asked him to send me some packets. They look like this
The product is called B4, (a play on before, get it? You take it before your activities)
It had the most interesting ingredient list Ive seen.
To list them all out
The Ingredients and their effects
L-Theanine-plays with the glutamate system, tweaking monoamine levels, boosting dopamine and serotonin, and potentiating the effects of GABA, the inhibitory neurotransmitter.
Theanine-a relaxant that puts you at ease without sedating and synergizes seamlessly with other stimulants.
Ashwagandha-general calming effect while also slashing neuro-inflammation and blunting cortisol levels by an average of 33%
Emoxypine aka Mexidol-boosts cerebral circulation, anxiety reduction effect, and shields your neurons from excitatory damage. Its knack for amplifying GABA sensitivity, along with its anti-inflammatory properties, is credited for its tranquilizing firepower.
Agmatine Sulfate-shows promise in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as in pain management and enhancing cognitive health. Its beneficial effects on cognitive health are due to its neuroprotective capabilities, which include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities.
Studies have also indicated that Agmatine can help curb cravings for various substances such as alcohol, opioids, and amphetamines.Lemon Balm Extract is known for its calming effects and its ability to elevate mood. These benefits are believed to arise from Lemon Balm's phytochemicals, which inhibit the breakdown of the neurotransmitter GABA by blocking the action of the enzyme GABA-Transaminase. While other compounds previously mentioned increase your brain's sensitivity to GABA, this increases GABA.
Sabroxy is a specialized, patented extract. The primary active ingredient in this extract is oroxylin A, which functions as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Oroxylin A elevates the extracellular concentrations of dopamine, thereby enhancing dopaminergic neurotransmission. Additionally, Sabroxy does NOT increase levels of adrenaline / noradrenaline which contributes to it's calm and clean stimulation and pro-social mood boosting effects.
Eria Jarensis Extract-a relatively obscure plant containing a compound called NN-Dimethylphenethylamine (N,N-DMPEA). This compound promotes a euphoric, mood-boosting, and pro-social state that makes it easier and more enjoyable to be present in social interaction. The stimulating properties that may contribute to nervousness / jitters are typically completely offset when combined with the other compounds in the stack
B4 Makes you Feel Relaxed and in a Good Mood
I was curious to try it by itself, so I mixed a satchel in water in the late morning. The taste was not bad, although not great. A 3/5. It designed to be mixed in water and drank quickly. Thankfully it wasnt bitter at all (Ive had some horrendously bitter preworkouts). It reminded me of dawn soap, an aromatic scent, but not the actual flavor of soap.
Regardless, it was easy to drink. So I swigged it down, and waited.
As I found it, its effects are definitely not "preworkout". You dont get wired that way at all.
Rather, it put me in a slightly euphoric state, and I ended up having a very productive 2 hours of creative writing intermixed with my usual daily correspondences.
Interesting
I did want to see what would happen if I used it before a workout, so the next day I mixed with an energy drink (a zero carlorie monster specifically, they only have 140mg of caffeine)
Similarly, I felt good, although with the added caffeine edge of increased adrenaline release. It was a good workout (it was a leg day).
I would not suggest it as a preworkout perse, but the "Im feeling good vibe" clearly was present.
Last test, Twitter Live
My final test was drinking it about 2 hours before I went live on twitter (this was the night before last).
I fielded questions for about 45 minutes. Did it help? IT DID.
Im well practiced with rapid fire Q&As, but I felt mentally sharp the entire time, with no mental fatigue of any kind.
Excellent.
This stuff WORKS
